Sandra Brewster

Sandra Brewster is a Canadian artist interested in the interplay between people and their environments, exploring how circumstance shapes our sense of self.  Her work employs various mediums to convey the intricate relationship between identity and movement.  This movement manifests not only through a depiction of a transition from one place to another but also as a metaphorical journey. Her photo and drawing based gel transfer technique is evident in the textured surfaces of her artworks. The surfaces of her transfers hint at an unfixed nature—something that resists easy identification while remaining profoundly present.  A graduate of the Masters of Visual Studies program at University of Toronto, Brewster’s work can be found in numerous private and public collections and has been exhibited nationally and abroad.  Her public sculpture A Place to Put Your Things is currently on view at the Harbourfront Centre, Toronto. Brewster is the 2024 recipient of the Paul de Heuck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award.
